Welcoming another Lib Dem to our Party

Caroline Spelman, Sunday, April 18th, 2010 .

Less than 48 hours after David Cameron invited the people of Britain to join us in making the changes we need for our country I had the pleasure of welcoming a Liberal Democrat councillor who made the decision to join the Conservatives.

Heidi Brunsdon is a district and county councillor in West Sussex and as a bright young mum of two, with heartfelt concerns about the environment and the public services we rely on, she is in many ways representative of the people I have been meeting who have decided to back the Conservatives for the change our country needs.

It was a bit of a mad-dash down to Sussex and back to my own constituency but in a day when so many people’s travel plans were thrown into chaos with the Volcanic eruption in Iceland I was lucky that the train connections worked well.

On the way back I was thinking how encouraging it is that there are people like Heidi who see the choice between five more years of Gordon Brown or real change with David Cameron and the Conservatives. It can’t be an easy decision when you’ve served other parties, it takes courage.

I then thought about the campaign being waged by Liberal Democrats in another constituency I visited earlier in the week; a campaign driven by negativity, personal attacks and mis-truths.  Having seen that at first hand, I can understand why people are making the decision to put their hopes and ambitions in our Party. I only hope we get the opportunity to try and meet them.

Hello. I have been watching conservatives party for a while and could see a potential change for better. I like the ideas, I just don’t think this is the best way of transferring it to people. Liberal democrats criticise other 2 parties, as they have done nothing wrong yet. They have no experience in ruling the country, however, Mr Clegg shown his humanity, and this is what people wants. Even his policies are similar to conservatives, he transfers it different way. I have started reading some of Conservatives policies and all I can read is, how Labour is bad and how different from Labour, Conservatives is going to be. Maybe sometimes you need to agree with them, and sometimes with Mr Clegg…. I liked Mr Camerons’ speeches, but website is too overloaded with slagging opponents. Just say as it is; there will be cuts and we have to go through this pain to make things better in future. Also small thing; listen to voice of people. Maybe little forum, where people can post on you website, what is for them important. I could not find and link to get in contact or make any comments on this campaign, apart from this blog, which moves only subjects brought by You.

Watching this all from a distance (I am in Greec of all places0 I am becoming more & more hopeful of a Conservative government returning to power at last.

I came to live here for business reasons 10 years ago & escaped much of the Labour government’s spin and mismanagement although ocasionally Private Eye would have me fuming.

I say good luck in the campaign and it is certainly time for a change in Britain!
